Alexander James Murphy OBE (born 22 April 1939) is an English former professional rugby league footballer, and coach of the mid to late 20th century. Known as 'Murphy the Mouth' (or "Yapper" by some referees) and regarded as one of the greatest halfbacks in the history of the British game,   he represented Great Britain in 27 Tests  and his club career was played at three clubs, St. Helens , Leigh and Warrington .

Rugby league has been part of Alex Murphy OBE’s life for as long as he can remember. It was just over 60 years ago last week that the young ‘Murph’ signed his first professional deal with St Helens, in 1955. He was just 16 back then, and with a glittering career in front of him. ‘The Mouth’, as he was sometimes called, was raised in Thatto Heath, but went on to win everything that it was possible for him to win in the sport, as a player and coach.
Alex Murphy O.B.E. was born on 22nd April 1939. He signed for the St Helens Rugby League Club just after Midnight, on his 16th Birthday, on 22nd April 1955. His signing on fee was £80. In a 'Rugby Leaguer' poll he was voted 'Player of the Millennium'.
